Crackdown on structures

CARDINIA Shire Council is cracking down on illegal structures after a local man was fined $4000 for failing to obtain a building permit.
Cardinia Shire Council officers say illegal structures are becoming more common and have warned residents about undertaking alterations, extensions and erecting new buildings without the necessary permits.
The council’s municipal building surveyor, Graeme Geary, said residents were responsible for checking whether their structure required a building permit and applying to a private building surveyor to get one.
“Illegal structures are becoming increasingly commonplace,” he said. “The council will not turn a blind eye to illegal practices and will take all steps necessary to ensure the Building Act is complied with.”
Recently, the Magistrates’ Court fined a local man for failing to obtain a building permit and ordered him remove his structure.
Under the Building Act 1993, building work must not begin unless a building permit has been issued.
Some projects also require a planning permit.
Information on building permits is available from the council offices in Henty Way, Pakenham, or on 1300 787 624.
