Quality high on smaller yarding

THE only price increase that could be claimed out of the smaller penning at VLE Pakenham was due to quality.
With the Melbourne Cup holiday being the next day, there were 40 per cent fewer cattle penned, and the quality of the yarding was very, very good.
A lot more top quality vealers were penned, which inflated averages, but prices were at best firm for a very small selection of cattle.
Most cattle sold to weaker demand and averaged three cents to six cents cheaper with some heifers and heavy steers 10 cents to 14 cents per kilogram cheaper.
Because of the public holiday on Cup Day a small number of bullocks, cows and bulls were penned.
Nearly 225 vealers were penned and most were in very good condition, and a large percentage were top quality B muscle calves.
These vealers had the potential for very high dressing percentages, and although there was one sale at 220 cents, most made from 192 cents to 210 cents per kilogram.
Good quality C muscle vealers made between 149 cents and 190 cents per kilogram.
Poor demand for the penning of 405 yearlings saw prices average six cents to 13 cents per kilogram lower.
Some of the larger falls was for heavier yearlings and heifers showing a reasonable amount of fat cover.
Supplementary fed yearlings made to 200 cents with most of the good to very good quality offering making between 136 cents and 182 cents for steers, and 137 cents and 162 cents per kilogram for heifers.
Approximately 150 grown cattle were penned, and none sold to reasonable demand.
Heavy steers and bullocks made from 146 cents to 160 cents, manufacturing grades 122 cents to 150 cents, and a small number of cows and grown heifers made between 116 cents and 145 cents per kilogram.
The penning of seven heavy bulls of very good to excellent quality and only made from 131 cents to 141 cents per kilogram.
The VLE draw for the week commencing Monday 9 November is as follows; 1, SEJ; 2, Elders; 3, Mick Hornsby; 4, Nathan Gibbon; 5. Alex Scott; 6, Rodwells; 7, Everitt and Seeley; 8, Landmark.
