LATROBE Labor MP Laura Smyth has announced the winners of the inaugural La Trobe Community Australia Day awards.
Ms Smyth said she initiated the awards as a way of appreciating leadership and community involvement in La Trobe.
Late last year she wrote to community groups in the electorate calling for nominations of people considered worthy of recognition for their efforts in the community.
Six award recipients from across the electorate have been announced: Leslie Herring, Kimberly Bulka, Paul Bulka, Kevin Smith, Alan Dale And William David Incoll.
“I believe that community leadership and involvement is extremely important to our democracy and, ultimately, to the quality of life that we all enjoy,” Ms Smyth said
“Australia Day is a time that we can reflect upon our achievements as a nation and as a community.
“We have much to be proud of and it is important to give thanks and recognition to the many people who help us achieve this.”
The inaugural La Trobe Community Australia day awards will be presented on January 26 at the Burrinja Gallery in Upwey.
