By Nicole Williams
A LONG-time employee of Gippsland Food Company was recognised for 40 years of service this week.
John Dore was congratulated by friends, family and colleagues at a presentation at the factory on Monday.
The Nar Nar Goon resident said he would easily do his 40 years at the company again and had seen many people come and go.
He has even worked with many current employees’ parents and grandparents.
“I have met a lot of interesting, and a lot of good people,” he said.
Andrew Nooy has worked with John for 26 years and said he was a very dedicated man who had become an expert and historian of the factory’s operations.
“He is a person everyone aspires to be – a great guy, a great worker,” Andrew said.
Other current and former co-workers told memories of working with John and spoke of his dedication, attitude, experience and work ethic.
He joined the company, then known as Nestle, on 19 January 1971 as a 15-year-old apprentice fitter and turner.
But only after a little help from his parents.
“My mum applied for it and my dad went to the interview with me and did all the talking – I was too shy,” he said.
During his 40 years, John saw the cannery turn to baby food and then produce frozen foods, and saw Nestle become Gippsland Food Company.
He is now the co-ordinator of the Quarter Century Club, exclusively for those who have worked for Gippsland Food Company for 25 years or more.
John finished the presentation with a speech thanking his co-workers and gave them a chuckle.
“As of the 19th of last month, I would like to tender my resignation … and give 10 years notice!”
