High-level flood probe

A PARLIAMENTARY committee has been formed to look into the cause and effects of Victoria’s floods, Bass MP Ken Smith has announced.
Mr Smith said Police and Emergency Services Minister Peter Ryan had acted promptly in response to concerns raised by him and others to establish the all-party committee.
“While the floods, which have caused such devastation throughout the northern part of my electorate, were obviously a natural disaster that no one had control over, we have to look into what other factors contributed to the extent of damage done,” he said.
“There is a lot of anger from some property owners who believe that the extent of flooding would not have been as bad if drains had been maintained and levees had not been removed during construction of the desalination plant pipeline. These are just some of the issues that this committee will be looking into.”
The newly formed committee has not yet set a date as to when a final report is due.
