Bulls charge for finals

By Kane Latham
CARDINIA flexed its muscle before the finals defeating the hapless Catani outright, Kooweerup got over the line against Tooradin, Pakenham Upper/Toomuc recorded a solid win knocking Upper Beaconsfield out of the finals and Beaconsfield cruised to victory against Officer in the final round of the WGCA for 2010-11.
Resuming at 4/39, Catani tried to fight, but was bundled out for just 144 runs in 41 overs in its second dig, leaving a lead of only 137 runs and the dangerous Cardinia plenty of overs to get the runs. Mark Evans fought hard with the bat, contributing 38 not out, but wickets kept falling around him.
Matt Celima found some much-needed form with the ball, taking 3/20 from six overs, and Jason Fisher picked up 2/14 from seven.
Pushing for the outright result to cement second place and a vital home final, Cardinia sent in veteran Ben Darose to open the batting with John Nooy. They wasted no time and reac hed 139 for no loss in just 26 overs to get Cardinia the full 20 points.
Darose finished on 90 not out, including 12 fours and one six, while Nooy scored a typically solid 40 not out, with three fours.
The result sets up a Cardinia-Kooweerup showdown in the semi-final.
Resuming at 3/18 and needing a win to take the fourth finals spot from Tooradin, Upper Beaconsfield’s first partnership for the day between Chris Pentland and Julian Bayard looked promising, until Pentland became the second of Jack Ryan’s five wickets, taking the score to 4/40.
From there, only Scott Pitcher (24) and Julian Bayard (26) showed any true fight, as Jack Ryan and Chris Smith showed they would be a real force in the coming seasons.
Jack Ryan in a fine spell took 5/35 from 21.2 and almost single-handedly ended Upper Beaconsfield’s finals aspirations. Chris Smith swung the ball both ways to finish with 3/47 from 18.
Chasing 184 for victory, Kooweerup got off to a disastrous 1/1 start when Matt Davey was caught behind off the bowling of Steve Hamill.
Mick Giles was in typical form and, after being dropped, slammed 60 runs to make Tooradin pay, before Brenton Adams got him, caught and bowled.
At tea, the score was 5/123 and the game was in the balance. Leigh Paterson looked shaky at the start, then hit the ball to all parts of the ground, scoring 55 and steering his team to victory with six wickets down, before some late hitting from Ben Miller (38) took Kooweerup’s score to all out for 237.
Brenton Adams took 4/62 for Tooradin and Steve Hamill picked up 2/34. Upper Beaconsfield’s loss to Pakenham Upper/Toomuc sets up a Beaconsfield-Tooradin showdown.
