WAYNE Gunton is the new president of the Garfield Bowling Club for the 2011-12 season.
Retiring president Alex Mentiplay paid tribute to the volunteers and players who, he said, had made this season one of the best – despite the weather causing major problems.
Three times during the summer, the green was totally under water – but on the brighter side, the club was well and truly above its head in competitive and financial terms.
The women’s Saturday pennant side won the grand final again, while the men’s division two side was runner-up.
The Wednesday triples competition was again highly successful, with several players from other clubs still waiting for a chance to participate in that competition.
In taking over the chair, Gunton thanked Mentiplay for all his hard work and presented him with a framed certificate of appreciation from the club.
Lyn Oliver will continue as treasurer and Ralph Slaughter as secretary.
The expertise of Les Pumphrey, as greens director, and his team will be enjoyed again in providing a good playing surface.
The men’s champion for the season was W. Goodman, with S. Whyte runner-up.
The minor champion was W. Gunton, ahead of P. Leishout, while the club pairs went to S. Bassed and T. Cleary, ahead of K. Rowlands and R. Lamport.
The 100 up went to K. Rowlands from S. Oliver, who won 21 up from G. Payne.
In the women’s section, R. Shaw was club champion from B. Sainsbery, W. Rowlands beat M. Lamport for the minor champion, while they combined to win the handicap pairs, ahead of I. Deane and B. Sainsbery. The 100 up went to R. Shaw from W. Rowlands, who was also runner-up in 21 up to M. Lamport.
The club fours were runners-up in the Mid Gippsland Bowling Association Grand Final. The team was Steve Bassed (skip), Gary Payne, Peter Leishout and Tom Cleary.
Garfield is hoping to attract new bowlers, both male and female, and of all ages. Contact 5625 5760 if interested.
