B1 and B2 the top bananas

THE Pakenham Pumas B1 and B2 baseball sides pounced on their opponents on the weekend – while the B3 side was, well, pounced on.
Pakenham’s top side took on Moorabbin, the top side – a great effort in its first year back in the winter competition.
A game in hand on top, Moorabbin travelled to Pakenham to tackle the third-placed Pumas.
A great diving catch from Pakenham’s Joey Thorpe in left field was the main highlight in the scoreless first two innings.
The third innings saw Moorabbin get a runner across the plate, only for the Pumas to reply. The Pumas took charge a few innings later, putting on four runs after stringing a number of hits together.
Moorabbin responded in the sixth with three, before Pakenham added a further run to push it to 7-5. Going into the ninth innings, the Pumas got themselves out of trouble when, with a Moorabbin run already scored, two outs and runners on first and second bases, Pakenham’s pitcher, Brunton picked off the runner at first base to end the game. Pakenham were winners, 7-6.
B2 also faced Moorabbin, but this side is bottom of the table.
Moorabbin scored a run from its first batter, but that would be all it would score as the undermanned Pumas piled on 22 runs over five innings to stay in second place.
The team did as asked, with excellent base running on top of some great hitting and fielding.
The B3 side was completely outclassed by Mornington, 1-32.
