THERE is no rivalry like a family rivalry but for Susan and Don Johns this week’s clash between the Magpies and the Hawks has an added interest.
For the past three years, Mrs Johns, 57, has madespecial footy coats for their dogs: in Collingwood colours for Gina the Sheltie and Hawthorn for her husband’s Cavalier King Charles spaniel Sofia.
“The coats are made out of recycled material that I get down from the op shop,” Mrs Johns said.
“I’ll use shirts, skirts, and even velvet, anything that will sit on a dog.”
Gina and Sofia can often be found sporting their winter coats on Pakenham’s Main Street, which is why Mr Johns has raised the stakes for this week’s game.
“If Hawthorn wins this week, Gina will have to wear a Hawks jacket for the rest of the year, and the same goes if the Pies win for Sofia,” she said.
But Mrs Johns is feeling pretty confident.
“We’re definitely going to win,” she said.
She has also offered to make a Hawks or Collingwood dog jacket for one of our lucky readers depending on this week’s result.
