Cold wet weather drags down quality

A SMALLER yarding of lighter quality head were yarded for last week’s Wednesday Fat Sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul.
This saw easier prices across all categories. Buyers were keen but with the cold and wet conditions effecting the quality, prices were marginally back with bullocks taking the biggest hit.
Fifty one bullocks eased 12 cents to 160.3 cents with the top price back four cents to 178 cents.
Sixty heifers were three cents easier at 159.8 cents, lighter frames and condition were evident, but heifers still managed to repeat last week’s top of 210 cents.
One hundred and ten steers were slightly heavier on average with the per head price of last week repeated.
This helped as the average price was three cents easier at 169.7 cents and the top price was 10 cents back at 200 cents.
One hundred and seventy three vealers also heavier saw the top reach 266.2 cents and remained in this area for several pens to see the average only one cent lighter at 206.6 cents.
Heavier weights improved the per head price for both bulls and cows on Thursday, with 14 bulls lifting their average to 156.2 cents and the top price 11 cents to 184.2 cents.
Three hundred and fifty four cows averaged $715 per head, $4 better, with a slight hiccup of 1.5 cents in average back to 130.1 cents, and the top was 161.2 cents.
