MORE than 1000 Cardinia Shire kids put their reading hats on last month and participated in a national storytelling event.
Rod Clement’s book Feathers for Phoebe was read out across the country at 11am as part of the Australia Library and Information Association’s National Simultaneous Storytime.
Cardinia Shire hosted its own session at the Kooweerup Community Centre with the PlayStart van and 30 children, parents and carers came along.
Children listened in as librarian Jo-Ann Hansford read out the popular children’s book.
Fifty-three groups registered with the council’s Best Start Partnership for the event.
Mayor George Blenkhorn also participated in the event at Beacon Hills College Junior Campus.
The event is run nationally each year to prepare children for school from an early age, as well as encouraging an enjoyment and interest in reading.
“It’s important to support parents, carers and educators to improve children’s reading, writing and numeracy abilities,” said the council’s Best Start facilitator Fiona Cost.
