Mixed market adds to erratic sales

THE larger yarding at VLE Pakenham was very mixed in quality, weight, age, breeding and anything else you could think of, which affected the prices.
Competition was sporadic, and demand was erratic because of these factors, and aided the price trends.
The larger number of cattle was produced by the penning of more heavy and older cattle, which included a few pens of Bos Indicus cattle originally from the west, coming from New South Wales.
Most of the vealers and yearlings sold at rates that were unchanged to five cents per kilogram dearer, while the other cattle were firm to five cents per kilogram lower.
Fewer vealers were offered so strong competition for the 220 head yarded saw B muscle vealers make mostly from 245 cents to 271 cents, and C muscle vealers 190 cents to 248 cents per kilogram.
Both trade and feedlot competition assisted in the higher price trends for 550 yearling steers and heifers.
Steers made mostly between 185 cents and 210 cents with supplementary fed to 245 cents per kilogram.
Heifers made mostly from 165 cents to 195 cents, and supplementary fed also to 245 cents per kilogram.
The balance of the yarding was made up of heavy yearling steers, prime and manufacturing bullocks, and some grown heifers and plainer quality bullocks.
The heavy yearlings made to 193 cents, grown steers to 188 cents, and prime bullocks 168 cents to 182 cents per kilogram.
Manufacturing bullocks made anywhere between 137 cents and 175 cents, and females from 138 cents to 170 cents per kilogram.
