Bowling along at the markets

THE third oldest bowling club in Victoria will use markets to go on a membership drive in an attempt to become bigger and better.
The Dandenong City Bowling Club will be at the Dandenong markets on the first three Fridays and Saturdays in August – and the nearby Caribbean Gardens markets on the first three Sundays and Wednesdays spruiking their wares.
Bowling mats will come out and people urged to “have a bowl”.
And, if anybody joins the Dandenong City club during August, they will obtain a membership for just $35.
The Dandenong City club dates back to the 1880s and has been ‘home’ to people from all walks of life, including doctors, shopkeepers and local councillors.
The club has three pennant sides – a mixed side of 16 who play on Saturdays, a mixed pennant side who play on Tuesdays and a night pennant side who take to the greens on Tuesday evenings over summer.
The greens are closed in the winter.
“We hold numerous social days and the non-contact sport of bowls is a great way of meeting people,” club spokesman Greg Payne said.
“People can buy new or secondhand bowls from the club. A game of bowls can cost you as little as $7, which includes a cupa … and a biscuit if you are lucky.”
If interested in a cuppa, a bikkie (maybe) and a good time bowling at a club laden with history, contact Payne on 9705 0583.
