Kathy nets nigh-on 90

By Jarrod Potter
NAR NAR GOON A grade netball goalshooter Kathryn Williams is used to getting bags of goals … but not 89 in a single match.
Williams netted 89 goals out of 116 in the A Grade match against Nyora, an individual achievement the Ellinbank District Netball Association believes could be a league record. Her haul also puts her well ahead on the league goal scoring table with 489 goals for the season, 86 ahead of the next best scorer.
Williams worked in tandem in attack with Melanie van Diemen, who snagged the other 27 goals in the rout of Nyora.
Williams acknowledged the hard work of her team mates to feed her the ball.
“The team had a really good win,” Williams said. “We got a good run on through the game, keeping our momentum going even though we were scoring at such a heavy rate.
“Georgie and Maisie from the centre fed us well.
“Intercepts by the back court players were crucial; the defenders worked hard and were able to get the ball up to Mel and me.”
When asked about her 89 goal haul, Williams kept keen perspective on the achievement.
“This was my best achievement for the year, but 89 is good enough for me.”
Williams’ 489 goals for the year are even more impressive considering she has missed a couple of games due to work commitments overseas in China and South Korea with the Melbourne Victory, where she worked as a myotherapist.
Williams hopes Nar Nar Goon’s good form can push them up the ladder and challenge Poowong for the title.
“Hopefully we can win (the premiership), that’s the plan,” Williams said. “I’m hoping we can move up to second by the end of the season.
“Poowong are the ones to knock off. They make it a bit tougher to get big bags, but if Mel and I can score well against them that would be great.”
The win keeps Nar Nar Goon in fourth place on the A grade ladder, with a healthy percentage of 173.59, a 22.09 per cent boost from the previous week.
