A SAWN-OFF shotgun, machete and tomahawk were used in a horrifying Tynong North home invasion.
One man is undergoing surgery and another is in hospital after the violent attack on Monday night.
Pakenham’s Detective Sergeant Phil Jury spoke to the Gazette on Tuesday morning while police crews were still at the Tynong North Road property after a long night of investigations.
He said two men, aged 44 and 47, were attacked by three male intruders not long after 9pm.
“It is believed that one man was able to escape and alerted police from a neighbouring property,” Det Sgt Jury said.
He said the two men, who were both known to police, had suffered injuries during the attack and while not life threatening, one man was undergoing surgery to his arms.
Police, including the dog squad, cordoned off the area once police were notified but the three men were believed to have already fled.
On Tuesday police walked the boundaries of the rural property searching for evidence. The house at the centre of the incident is located three kilometres from the Princes Highway, is mainly surrounded by bushland and has a number of greenhouses on the property.
“We don’t believe it’s a random attack and we’re unsure of the motive at this stage,” Det Sgt Jury said.
“Since we don’t believe it’s random we don’t believe residents in the area should be concerned for their own safety, but they should always be careful.”
It is not known whether anything was taken from the property, as police are waiting to interview the victims.
Residents in the small, quiet town said they were shocked when hearing about the brazen attack, probably the most significant crime since the unsolved Tynong murders during the 1980s.
