A SECTION of unpaved road on Moody Street in Kooweerup has been labelled as dangerous and inconvenient for road users.
The one kilometre road is currently sealed at each end with a 150 metre section of dirt road in the middle.
Principal of Koow-eerup Primary School David Payne said the school has been concerned for some time about the unsealed section of the road.
He said parents have to travel on the unsealed part of the road and the new housing estate being built at the other end of the road will mean more drivers using the road.
“It’s unacceptable that a road is unsealed inside the main township, especially with a new estate going in, which will have more than 300 residents using the road, which will be their main access to the school.
“It’s dangerous at the moment because of the cars coming from two opposite directions going from bitumen to unsealed to part sealed. It’s just got to be totally sealed all the way.”
Lynette Dineen, director and general manager of Westernport Road Lines, which is located on the unsealed section, said it is the only inner town road that remains a dirt road.
She said it was a huge inconvenience to drivers.
“It’s a pretty rough service and we get a high level of traffic through the street, which creates a lot of dust.
“With all the housing developments, it’s going to be even worse because it’s going to be used by people going to the station and the bypass.
“It’s not a good situation,” she said.
Cardinia Shire Council spokesman Paul Dunlop said residents can apply for a Special Charge Scheme to pay towards the cost of sealing the road.
“Council can also use this process to contribute part of the necessary funds.
“A scheme can allow a road to be sealed, repaired or drainage put in place.”
