FLOOD-RAVAGED sections of Bunyip Main Drain and the surrounding roads will be repaired in a joint venture between Melbourne Water and Cardinia Shire Council.
The four-month long project will repair the Bunyip River Road (North) and target sections where flooding and erosion have occurred.
Melbourne Water waterways manager Rod Clifford said the road would be realigned away from the drain’s embankment to help protect the road and nearby properties.
“We also need to stabilise a section of the drain’s northern embankment, where significant landslips have occurred,” Mr Clifford said.
“A new guard railing will also be installed to improve the safety of the road.”
Bunyip River Road (North) will be closed throughout the project and access to the Bunyip River (North) will be restricted.
Construction starts in mid January, and is expected to be completed in May.
“Bunyip River Road (North) will be closed to traffic between the Evans Road Bridge, and Corcoran and Bunyip Modella Roads for the next four months,” Cr Ed Chatwin said.
“Motorists should look out for detour signs that will divert traffic around the road closure.
Cr Stuart Halligan said the community had been affected by road closures for nearly 12 months.
“There has been an impact on the community and we now look forward to the works being carried out and local primary producers being able to resume normally with their day to day business.”
