THE Pakenham Bowls Club hosted the seventh annual reunion of the now defunct West Gippsland Bowls Association on Saturday.
Sixteen teams entered the event with players from Pakenham, Cockatoo, Garfield, Longwarry, Berwick and Lilydale all among the action.
Those that say age is a deterrent to being a competitive bowler could take a leaf from Frank Brown’s team. Brown along with Col Green, Jack McFarlane and Charlie Allen had a combined age of 328 years, an average age of 82.
Brown’s team not only enjoyed its day but led the competition after two rounds before finishing in fourth place.
Great effort guys. We all hope you are bowling for many years to come.
The day was won by Gordiana Baric’s team of John Cootes, Sam Mazarella and Miles Cahill who bowled very strongly all day to win their three games. Runners-up were Julian Dyer’s team, of Jim Smith, Gian Pianezzola and Irene Stanbridge.
It was also a pleasure to see some young bowlers, mainly from Cockatoo, getting interested in the game. These are the bowlers of the future and need to be encouraged at all clubs.
Barefoot bowls recommences this Friday night. All welcome. Children to be under strict adult supervision. Twilight triples is back on board as from this Thursday.
