A REDUCTION of numbers sold to an almost full field of regular buyers at VLE Pakenham. The exceptional feed growth in the region was reflected in some lines of vealer heifers.
Lot feeder buyers were present, though were unable to compete strongly against the domestic processors, while restockers were also active on plainer steers.
Strong competition on vealers from all domestic processors particularly on the lighter weights helped lift those categories up to 10 cents while the heavier vealer sold firm to two cents per kilogram dearer.
European steers and heifers sold from 205 cents to 238 cents per kilogram. The mixed quality offering of yearling steers and heifers suitable for the trade sold to steady demand. With prices holding firm, the medium weight heifer portion averaged 179 cents while medium weight steers sold from 174 cents to 210 cents per kilogram. Restocking yearling steers returning to the paddock reached a top price of 210 cents per kilogram or the equivalent of $966 per head.
Heavy grown cattle numbers eased, and quality was outstanding and prices strengthened for heavy grown steers up to four cents, while heavy bullocks held firm to two cents per kilogram cheaper.
The heavy C3 and C4s ranged in price from 162 cents to 195 cents per kilogram. Heavy grown heifers sold to spirited competition prices ranging from 154 cents to 185 cents per kilogram.
