Condition decreases as market gets bigger

ANOTHER lift on supply occurred at VLE Pakenham, but there was a larger percentage of the yarding that have slipped in condition or were of plainer quality.
However, this left a sizable number of good quality cattle that were sold to all of the usual buyers.
While some cattle sold at dearer rates due to stronger feedlot and restocker demand, some sold at unchanged rates.
However, these were only of a small percentage with most cattle averaging two cents to seven cents per kilogram cheaper.
More than 600 vealers were penned, but a good number showed signs of declining condition.
The best quality vealers sold from 200 cents to 236 cents, but a number of others sold between 165 cents and 210 cents per kilogram.
Lighter weight vealers (300 kilogram or less) were proffered.
There were 800 yearling steers and heifers penned, and this included a number of heavy and extra heavy weights.
Prices for steers were mostly from 172 cents to 205 cents with supplementary fed to 225 cents per kilogram.
Heifers sold from 157 cents to 198 cents per kilogram for most sales.
Due to the strong demand for cattle to feed-on, a larger number of steers were purchased between 178 cents and 215 cents, while heifers made 153 cents to 195 cents per kilogram.
About 550 grown cattle were penned. Better quality grown steers and prime bullocks made from 172 cents to 181 cents for bullocks, and up to 188 cents per kilogram for steers.
Numerous sales of secondary bullocks were noted from 147 cents to 173 cents per kilogram.
Because of the vast nature and quality of the yarding, a number of cattle made from 128 cents to 165 cents per kilogram.
