THE Outlook Community Centre in Pakenham will send a group of cyclists on a 520-kilometre ride next month in an effort to raise money to help rebuild after the devastating February floods of 2011.
Outlook will use a government grant to replace its Pakenham centre, which was flooded last year, and now needs funds to buy essential equipment, fixtures and furniture.
A team of top amateur bike riders have volunteered to ride 520 kilometres from Echuca to Port Fairy on the weekend of Saturday 31 March and Sunday 1 April as part of the annual Murray to Moyne bike ride.
The ride is an annual 24-hour team relay over a distance of about 520km, starting from the locations of Mildura, Swan Hill and Outlook team’s starting point in Echuca.
Outlook has raised between $10,000 and $20,000 in each of the five years it has entered a team in the ride.
Funds were raised through sponsorship from a range of Outlook business contacts.
The ride starts early Saturday morning and, following an overnight stop at Hamilton, ends in Port Fairy on Sunday.
Sarah Kelly, volunteer co-ordinator at Outlook, thanked Scott Winton Insurance Brokers for becoming gold sponsors of the Outlook team.
“We appreciate the support that Scott Winton are giving to Outlook with their gold sponsorship of $5000,” Ms Kelly said.
“The funds are going to go towards the fit-out of the new community centre, which is being built this year. We will continue to fundraise for the rest of the year to raise enough funds for the project.”
Ms Kelly said there were still a couple of spots available as either riders or support crew for the Outlook team.
Participants are required to fundraise $1000 and be available from Friday 30 March to Sunday 1 April 2012.
