Wins bring teams near finals

GARFIELD Bowling Club’s first and second teams have both moved closer to securing finals berths with big wins on Saturday.
Playing at home on Saturday, the Division 2 side outplayed Morwell and, despite losing on two rinks, won 97-90.
Gary Payne’s and Les Pumphrey’s teams led the charge with strong wins.
Individual scores: W. Goodman, R. Shaw, S. Oliver and S. Whyte (s) lost 21-27; P. Dawes, M. Shaw, T. Cleary and G. Payne (s) won 28-20; W. Gunton, R. Lamport, P. Leishout and S. Bassed (s) lost 20-22 and F. Prins, S. Gemmill, K. Rowland and L. Pumphrey (s) won 28-21.
The Division 5 side had a hard-fought tussle at Longwarry, running out 62-57 winners.
Bob Hope’s team starred with a string of contributions and came away 13-shot winners.
But Ken Tomlin’s side, regular winners this season, went down 21-12.
Individual scores: R. James, J. Lenders, L. Shatwell and R. Hope (s) won 28-15; K. Sainsbery, R. Charles, D. Knight and G. Asquith won 23-21 and A. Helmuth, J. Rose, A. Mentiplay and K. Tomlin (s) lost 21-12.
Rain washed out the Division 6 match at Morwell and with it the Garfield side’s finals chances, despite its late charge over recent weeks.
In Tuesday Pennant the Garfield ladies side recorded another strong win, 69-52 against Warragul, to secure second place on the ladder.
Garfield plays Drouin away in the final round in a potential finals preview.
Individual scores: L. Moss, W. Rowlands, M. Lamport and R. Shaw (s) won 27-15; I. Deane, B. Sainsbery, E. Lee and J. Pocklington drew 19-19; and R. Charles, P. Marriot, J. Tomlin and L. Asquith won 23-18.
