Carol Porter’s letter (Future Finances, Gazette, 16 July) stating that the Liberal state government would manage finances responsibly carried the implication that a Labor government might not.
People might need to be reminded that the Bracks and Brumby governments held office for 11 years.
In that time they delivered a surplus every one of those years, averaging about $900 million each year.
Further, those governments had positive support of the community as well as business.
The “do nothing” Baillieu Liberal period was followed by the “quick do something” Napthine government, yet the Liberals probably wonder why they are down in the polls.
Plans and promises are important, but a record of sound achievement is the ultimate test.
