Buyer returns to boost prices

THERE was a very good sale on Wednesday last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, with 140 extra head penned during which prices were firm to stronger.
Good weighted bullocks forced prices and with the previous week’s missing buyer present, results were improved.
Double the heifers were penned in comparison to the previous sale and there were lifts in the top pens with a firm outcome.
Steers were similar in numbers and the end result was a firm average.
Veal lifted among the better pens with only a few secondary pens easing the average, although agents quoted the vealer section as stronger on the previous week.
The yard average was firm at 211.2 cents.
Eighty one bullocks made to 225 cents, back three cents, and averaged 209.2 cents, up six cents; 106 heifers made to 226.6 cents, up three cents, and averaged 193.4 cents, firm; 157 steers made to 235 cents, up five cents, and averaged 202.4 cents, firm and 438 vealers made to 272.2 cents, up seven cents, and averaged 221.7 cents, firm.
Thursday’s Bull and Cow Sale was up 223 head and demand remained firm to stronger, especially in the bull section with the top bull selling to 253.6 cents per kilo.
This was up 14 cents on the previous sale with the bull average up five cents to 201.1 cents.
Fifteen bullocks sold to a top of 189.6 cents to average 185.8 cents, firm, and 531 cows reached 212.2 cents, up two cents, and with some light secondary pens the average eased four cents to 154 cents, with the yard average back five cents to 159 cents.
Monday’s Calf Sale contained 297 head with Friesian heifers selling to $560, beef calves reached $180, bull calves topped at $102 and Jersey heifers $180.
