Libraries, not liquor

WE NOTED Garry Runge’s comments in the Gazette on 11 March with regard to needing a library and not another liquor outlet. We happily endorse this position.
What we cannot agree with is his comment with regard to libraries in the area in that one must travel to either Pakenham or Narre Warren as – “the Mechanics’ Institute is pretty limited”.
The Berwick Mechanics’ Institute and Free Library runs a full free library service for the area. We have almost 5000 borrowers registered in Casey and Cardinia, with many coming long distances for the personal service we offer.
Berwick Library has a borrowing stock of around 24,000 items. Not what one could call ‘limited’ in any way.
We wish Mr Runge every success in establishing a new library in Beaconsfield, however we encourage Beaconsfield residents to use Berwick Library where they will be assured of a friendly, helpful welcome.
Lyn Wyatt, Library Manager,
Berwick Mechanics’ Institute and Free Library.
