Market varies on quality shortfall

There were approximately 850 export and 900 young cattle penned at VLE Pakenham, representing a decrease of 300 head week-on-week.
The usual buying group was present but not all operating in a stronger market.
Overall quality was plainer than the previous sale however demand from processors was stronger.
The larger selection of vealers suited to butcher orders sold up to six cents per kilogram dearer.
Yearling steers and heifers suited to the trade sold two cents to six cents per kilogram dearer.
Feedlot operators were very keen with steers and heifers to feed on gaining nine cents to 12 cents per kilogram.
The best grown steers and bullocks sold firm while the secondary lines improved to see averages three cents to six cents per kilogram dearer.
Heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish lifted 11 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight Friesian and crossbred manufacturing steers improved five cents to seven cents per kilogram.
The vealers sold mostly from 218 cents to 267 cents per kilogram.
Yearling trade steers made between 224 cents and 256 cents per kilogram.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 205 cents and 234 cents per kilogram.
Feeder steers and heifers made from 192 cents to 237 cents per kilogram.
Grown steers sold from 210 cents to 236 cents per kilogram.
Bullocks made between 210 cents to 236 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight bullocks sold between 205 cents and 224 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish made from 192 cents to 226 cents after a top of 240 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers sold from 186 cents to 198 cents with the crossbred portion from 192 cents to 221 cents per kilogram.
