Buyers keep market firm

There were approximately 650 export and 1100 young cattle penned at VLE Pakenham, representing a decrease of 230 head week-on-week.
There was a full field of buyers present and operating in a generally firm market. Quality was very mixed with a good selection of secondary and plainer types suitable to feed or restock and prime drafts more limited.
The vealers suited to butcher orders held firm for a more limited selection. Yearling trade steers sold close to firm while the heifer portion slipped four cents per kilogram for most.
Feeder steers sold a little dearer while the heifers to feed on slipped on last sale.
Grown steers and bullocks sold firm for a more limited selection while a better offering of Friesian manufacturing steers improved 10 cents per kilogram.
Vealers sold mostly from 240 cents to 312 cents per kilogram.
Yearling trade steers made between 260 cents and 308 cents per kilogram.
Yearling heifers suited to the trade sold between 235 cents and 308 cents per kilogram.
Feeder steers made from 240 cents to 278 cents with the heifer portion from 225 cents to 257 cents per kilogram.
Grown steers sold from 250 cents to 311 cents per kilogram.
Bullocks made between 249 cents and 313 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish sold between 218 cents and 269 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers made from 230 cents to 235 cents with the crossbred portion from 230 cents to 270 cents per kilogram.
