Prices and quality slips

An increase of numbers last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, saw 636 head yarded for the Fat Sale on Wednesday.
Condition was regarded as easier which would be expected given the cooler weather of late and, with processors holding stock, prices in some areas slipped slightly, mainly in the secondary section although the top prices of the previous week were hard to obtain.
Bullock numbers were back with demand easier.
Heifers saw nearly double the number and with better demand lifted for the sale.
Steers also numbered larger and was one category to lift the top price and ended the day firm on average.
Vealer pens contained a larger number of secondary head and slipped seven cents on average in comparison to the previous sale.
The yard average was eight cents easier at 245.5 cents.
Fifty three bullocks topped at 295 cents per kilogram, back five cents and averaged 254.4 cents, back 24 cents; 124 heifers topped at 275 cents, up 13 cents, and averaged 266.6 cents, up four cents; 125 steers topped at 295 cents, up five cents, and averaged 248.7 cents, firm and 324 veal topped at 310 cents, back two cents, and averaged 250.8 cents, back seven cents.
Bulls on Thursday sold to stronger demand averaging nine cents up at 241.5 cents, to top at 271.6 cents.
Twenty four bullocks made to 263.6 cents and averaged 224.7 cents, and 706 cows were yarded and sold to a top of 243.2 cents, up 13 cents.
Some light condition pens eased the average to 172.2 cents, back 11 cents.
Thursday’s yard average was 178.2 cents, back 10 cents.
