Unfinished head pushed onto market

Numbers dropped this week across the state and condition was below average as the cold weather took hold, and with vendors making the most of the improved prices, more unfinished head are being penned for the sales.
All this coupled with the fact that processors are holding stock from the larger numbers delivered in recent weeks have caused an easing in prices across most categories at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul.
Last week’s Fat Sale saw 230 less head yarded.
The smaller numbers tried to hold prices but ended the day with the average easing five cents, with the yard average being 248.4 cents.
Fifty seven bullocks made to 288 cents, firm, and averaged 260.2 cents, up two cents; 69 heifers made to 280 cents, up four cents, and averaged 241.1 cents, up seven cents; 113 steers made to 288 cents, back 13 cents, and averaged 240.9 cents, back 22 cents, and 278 vealers made to 312 cents, back five cents, and averaged 251 cents, back three cents.
Condition was a factor again on Thursday with some very light pens on offer, with processors cautious due to the recent price lifts and the recovery from the lighter bodies, and again this week missing buyers had an impact on the sale.
Twenty one bulls made to 275.6 cents, up nine cents to average 232.5 cents, up seven cents; 356 cows reached 231.6 cents, up two cents, with the average of 162.5 cents being back 14 cents on the previous week.
