Poetic eyes on winter words

By DANI ROTHWELL

THE Garfield Picture Theatre will play host to the Bush Poets Arvo, as part of the Friends of Garfield Incorporated’s Garfield Heritage Winterfest.
The Bush Poets Arvo is being run to allow locals the opportunity to come and recite some of their poetry.
Venue owner Fred Perez has been working on the Garfield Picture Theatre renovations with his partner Susan McMahon for the past 14 years.
“Supporting artistic ventures is exactly what the theatre needs to do,” he said.
“It was initially a poets breakfast, but it’s morphed into an arvo and I instantly said yeah great, I love that idea.”
The Friends of Garfield Incorporated approached Mr Perez to run this event as part of a celebration of the heritage of Garfield.
Secretary of the Friends of Garfield Incorporated, Kate Everke, said the traders in the main street would display photographs of history.
“The Garfield Heritage Winterfest is all about celebrating the heritage of Garfield,” she said.
“The Old Picture Theatre is a heritage building within Garfield.”
During the Heritage Winterfest a community raffle will be held, with prizes donated by local businesses.
The MC for the event is local musician, Pat Wakefield.
“Anyone’s welcome to come and do some poetry,” he said.
The Bush Poets Arvo will be held at the Garfield Picture Theatre from 1pm on Saturday 1 August, 2015.
Entry costs $5 and a community raffle will be running.
