Man killed on overnight fishing trip

POLICE are still investigating the death of a 53-year-old Kooweerup man in Western Port who is believed to have fallen into the water during a fishing trip overnight.

Investigators have been told that he and a Tooradin man, also in his 50s, set off from Tooradin in a fishing boat early this morning.

It is believed that the Kooweerup man fell into the water from the side or rear of the boat, prompting the Tooradin man to jump in to save him.

The pair were located by a passing boat in the water between French Island and Tooradin about 3.20am this morning.

They were brought to shore at Hastings, with the surviving man taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
