Buyers compete in expensive market

There were approximately 660 export and 900 young cattle penned at VLE Pakenham representing an increase of 730 head week-on-week.
The regular domestic buyers and a larger field of exporters were operating in a dearer market.
Quality was mixed with a limited but larger selection of prime cattle and a good supply of secondary young cattle suited to feed or restock.
The larger selection of heavy weight vealers improved 10 cents per kilogram.
Yearling steers to the trade gained up to 14 cents while the medium weight feeder lines lifted 18 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade held firm.
Grown steers and bullocks sold from five cents dearer to mostly 10 cents better.
Heavy weight vealers suited to butcher orders sold from 284 cents to 315 cents.
Yearling trade steers made between 286 cents and 315 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 262 cents and 286 cents after a top of 308 cents.
Medium weight feeder steers made from 270 cents to 298 cents with the heifer portion from 260 cents to 296 cents.
Grown steers sold from 280 cents to 303 cents.
Bullocks made between 273 cents and 297 cents.
Heavy weight crossbred manufacturing steers sold between 255 cents and 275 cents for a limited selection.
