Grass cattle lack finish

THERE were approximately 500 export and 870 young cattle penned representing a decrease of 230 head from the sale of a fortnight ago at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
There was a full field of buyers present and competing in a dearer market.
Quality was mixed with a good selection of grain assisted cattle while most grass cattle lacked finish.
Feedlots were very strong with some extra competition for black steers.
Heavy weight vealer steers to butchers gained four cents to 12 cents while the heifer portion held firm.
Yearling trade steers sold firm while the yearling heifers to the trade lifted four cents to 13 cents per kilogram.
Many of the lighter weight grain assisted yearlings went to vealer orders due to the lack of well finished vealers on offer.
Feeder steers sold 15 cents dearer. Grown steers and bullocks sold firm to slightly dearer for a plainer selection.
Heavy weight vealers suited to butcher orders sold from 311 cents to 351 cents. Yearling trade steers made between 302 cents and 332 cents. Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 276 cents and 334 cents.
Medium weight feeder steers made from 285 cents to 314 cents.
Grown steers sold from 282 cents to 310 cents. Bullocks made between 275 cents and 295 cents for a limited selection.
Heavy weight grown heifers sold between 255 cents and 275 cents after a top of 302 cents for a high yielding Euro bred heifer.
A limited selection of mostly light weight Friesian manufacturing steers made from 222 cents to 243 cents while a handful of crossbreds reached a top of 288 cents.
