Light and lean market

THERE were approximately 300 export and 650 young cattle penned representing a decrease of 500 head week-on-week at the Victorian Livestock Exchange.
Most of the usual buying group was present and operating in a dearer market.
Quality was off as most grass cattle were lacking finish with a limited selection of grain assisted trade cattle while lighter and leaner cattle were in greater supply.
Heavy weight vealers suited to butcher orders were in short supply lifting two cents to five cents.
Yearling trade steers gained up to eight cents.
Yearling heifers suited to the trade held firm with more feedlot competition for the better slaughter ready black heifers.
Grown steers and bullocks lifted two cents to three cents for a plainer selection.
Heavy weight vealers to butchers sold from 303 cents to 340 cents.
Yearling trade steers made between 287 cents and 316 cents.
Yearling heifers suited to the trade sold between 262 cents and 307 cents.
Medium weight feeder steers made from 270 cents to 312 cents with the heifer portion from 270 cents to 299 cents.
Grown steers sold from 272 cents to 299 cents after a top of 308 cents for a pen of European bred steers off grain.
A handful of bullocks made between 270 cents and 290 cents. Heavy weight crossbred manufacturing steers sold between 225 cents and 278 cents.
