High quality maintains prices

LAST week’s Wednesday fat sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange consisted mainly of vealers with a handfull of heifers and steers.
Vealer prices remained strong with the top still in the mid to high 340 cent mark.
Quality in the better pens is still very high as prices indicate, heifers remained firm in the better pens but the secondary pens struggled for competition, and steer quality in the secondary pens has slipped in recent weeks keeping processors at arm’s length.
The week’s yard average was back five cents to 280.7 cents.
A total of 29 heifers topped at 300 cents, back 17 cents, and averaged 234.3 cents, back 41 cents, 30 steers topped at 306 cents, back 24 cents and averaged 249.7 cents, back 43 cents and 360 veal topped at 345 cents, back three cents and averaged 291.9 cents, up two cents.
