THERE were approximately 370 export and 370 young cattle penned representing an increase of 400 head week-on-week due to last week’s public holiday at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
The usual buying group was present and operating in a mixed market.
Quality improved with a larger and better selection of prime cattle on offer.
Vealers sold to softer competition with prices falling 21 cents to 29 cents per kilogram for the heavy weights while the handful of lighter calves eased 10 cents to 15 cents.
Yearling trade cattle sold from firm to a few cents dearer. Grown steers gained 12 cents while the bullocks improved five to six cents.
Heavy weight vealers to butchers sold from 346 cents to 385 cents.
Yearling trade steers made between 331 cents and 368 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 307 cents and 371 cents.
Grown steers made from 292 cents to 339 cents.
Bullocks sold from 312 cents to 325 cents. Grown heifers reached a top of 324 cents.
Crossbred manufacturing steers sold up to 310 cents with a handful of Friesians reaching 265 cents.
