Firm demand for reduced numbers

Vealer and steer numbers were back slightly last week at Baw Baw’s Livestock Exchange fat sale but this did not deter buyers from these categories because both recorded good average increases, selling to firm demand.
Bullock numbers were up and also saw a good average lift, extra heifers were yarded in comparison to last week and the better pens sold to strong demand, some lighter bodies in the secondary pens eased the average, but overall the sale was stronger on the day.
The week’s yard average was four cents better at 310.4 in which 23 bullocks made to 306 cents back six cents, and averaged 285 cents, up 25 cents, 46 heifers made to 342.2 cents, up 47 cents and averaged 269 cents, back six cents, 44 steers made to 320 cents, up eight cents, and averaged 284.9 cents, up 19 cents, and 240 veal made to 382.6 cents, back five cents, and averaged 333.9 cents, up 12 cents.
Fifteen bulls penned on Thursday saw heavier weights result in the average price per head dip only $10.
The top sale made to 274.6 cents, back five cents, and the average eased 13 cents to 238.6 cents, 431 cows sold to firm demand reaching 274.6 cents, back slightly on the previous week, but continued the trend over several pens keeping the average up with a three cent increase to 208.2 cents,11 bullocks sold to good demand topping at 280 cents to average 252 cents.
