Poor finish hinders market

There were approximately 500 export and 500 young cattle penned at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange representing an increase of 280 head week-on-week.
The usual buying group was present and operating in a mixed market.
Quality improved a little with a better selection of prime cattle while there was still a large proportion lacking finish.
Vealers to butchers eased by seven cents while the better grain assisted trade cattle improved a little. Trade weight grass heifers gained up to nine cents while steers were firm. Feeder steers were a few cents dearer overall, grown steers and bullocks eased eight cents and heavyweight crossbred manufacturing steers were off by five cents.
Vealers to butchers sold from 330 cents to 365 cents, yearling trade steers made between 310 cents and 359 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 290 cents and 356 cents, feeder steers made from 300 cents to 369 cents, grown steers sold from 281 cents to 320 cents, bullocks made between 278 cents and 310 cents.
Heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish sold between 280 cents and 305 cents, heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers made from 255 cents to 280 cents with the crossbred portion from 265 cents to 301 cents.
