There were approximately 235 export and 200 young cattle penned at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange this week, representing a decrease of 290 head week-on-week.
The usual buying group was present and operating in a cheaper market in places. Quality declined with fewer prime cattle on offer.
There were very few vealers on offer.
Yearling trade steers sold to mixed results with most selling two cents to four cents easier while there was the odd sale a little dearer.
Yearling heifers to the trade slipped eight cents to 11 cents. Grown steers and bullocks sold to firm demand for the plainer quality offering with averages firm to slightly easier. Grown heifers showing good finish eased eight cents.
Friesian and crossbred manufacturing steers held firm.
The handful of lighter weight vealers reached 300 cents, yearling trade steers sold between 283 cents and 330 cents, yearling heifers to the trade made between 254 cents and 310 cents, grown steers made from 265 cents to 282 cents, and bullocks sold from 268 cents to 293 cents.
Heavy weight grown heifers made between 246 cents and 265 cents, heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers sold between 228 cents and 232 cents with the crossbred portion between 240 cents and 272 cents.
