Just how man people have the nickname ‘Boofa’ in the Pakenham region?
Local resident Anthony Thomas is a proud Boofa, but admits the numbers are growing.
“There are plenty; some may say more than enough,” Anthony said.
Anthony is actually a third generation Boofa.
“My cousin Brendan Faulkner and mate Clint Evans are both Boofa or Boof,” he said.
The nickname was coined in his younger days and has stuck ever since.
“It was Boofa from dad, then my mates and then everyone,” he said.
“I went to Berwick High and most of the teachers called me Boofa.
“Except when I was in strife, then they’d call me Anthony, but a lot of people didn’t even know my first name,” he said.
The 39yearold said the number of Boofas has grown to epidemic proportions.
“I remember my first senior football coach at Beaconsfield Football Club name was Ron Allan. Of course he was a Boofa as well.
“That caused some confusion now I think about it.”
Anthony’s eightyearold son Jackson has also taken to dad’s nickname.
“He tries to call me Boofa already, so I have to remind him that it’s dad.
“But it’s only a matter of time before he works it out,” Anthony said.
Jackson has already been labelled “little Boofa” and with dad “big Boofa” the two are set to make a great nickname team for many years to come.
