JESUS Christ of Latterday Saints members from the Berwick and Narre Warren wards collected more than $3400 toward the Casey March Red Cross Calling appeal.
Most of the money was collected from the High Street, Clyde and Lyall roads, Berwick, intersection between 9am and 2pm on Saturday, 11 March.
Collectors said motorists were generous and some emptied all their spare cash into the collector buckets, while others gave one or two dollars.
They said the gold coin donations may have been small individually, but collectively made the appeal quite successful.
Spokesperson for the group Michael Mamouney said Casey residents and people passing through had good reason to be proud of their generosity.
Mr Mamouney said members of the church had helped with the Red Cross Calling appeal for more than 20 years.
