Groups to field ideas

By Jim Mynard
Casey Council will establish a steering group for the new Casey Fields sporting complex at Cranbourne.
Mayfield Ward councillor Kevin Bradford called for the committee, saying it needed to hold regular meetings until the project was complete.
Casey acting chief executive Steve Dalton said in a report to the 4 October council meeting the intent was to form an overseeing committee.
Mr Dalton said it would have broad representation from organisations which had a high level of interest and commitment to the success of Casey Fields.
Cr Bradford said Casey Fields would become a sporting capital and the crown of sport in the City of Casey.
But he was concerned about the scale and scope of the ‘fields’.
“It is a very large project and, because of this, there should be community input.
“When you look at the groups that will use the facility you see there is a chance for them to have a say,” he said.
“When the project is finished we will have various committees, but there will be a need to have an overall committee of management.
Cr Bradford said the committee he proposed would be a forerunner and it was important that it be put in place early.
“People have a right to know what is being built in their own backyard,” he said.
Balla Balla Ward councillor Colin Butler said some groups may not take up the option to be represented but would be given the chance.
“We need to get all the user clubs together so they are aware of what is going on,” he said.
Organisations to be offered a seat on the committee will be VicRoads, Melbourne Water, Environmental Protection Authority, Cranbourne Police, Cranbourne Roads and Infrastructure Group, Cranbourne and District Residents Association, Casey Scorpions, Casey South Melbourne Cricket Club, Cranbourne Football Club, Cranbourne Cricket Club, Casey Access and Equity Committee, Bicycle Victoria, Devon Meadows Junior Football Club, Cranbourne Netball Club, and Berwick Human Powered Vehicle Club.
The committee will hold its inaugural meeting during the first week of November 2005, and hold regular meetings until the project is finished.
