PAKENHAM people can take a closer look at the town’s new aquatic centre being built at the Toomuc Reserve.
Residents could also start turning their thoughts to a name for the multimillion dollar complex which is expected to open early next year.
The aquatic and recreation centre will feature a 25metre lap pool as well as smaller recreation and program pools, a gymnasium, cafe and childminding facilities.
With major extensions at the recreation centre, including eight new basketball courts, the complex on the Princes Highway will be one of the largest in Melbourne.
Councillors and user groups carried out a site inspection this week and an open invitation has been issued to all interested residents to book in for a guided tour this Sunday, 11 September at which project architect David Newstead will provide an update on progress at the pool.
Cr Leonora Cox said construction of the centre was progressing well with site visitors now able to get a real appreciation of the look and feel of the centre.
“The striking, curved design of the centre has attracted a lot of attention but from the road it’s hard to appreciate the size and quality of the three pools, gymnasium and program rooms that are taking shape inside,” she said.
“This is an excellent opportunity for residents to get a firsthand look at the many facilities that will be theirs to enjoy when the centre opens early next year.”
Schools and other groups have also been asked to offer suggestions for a name for the centre.
Cardinia Shire communications officer Jeanette Langan said some interesting possibilities had already been raised with the council continuing to receive suggestions.
To ensure visitor safety, numbers on the construction site tours this Sunday are strictly limited.
Tours will take place on the halfhour between 10am and 3.30pm.
Bookings should be made early on 5945 4222.
Sturdy footwear must be worn on the tour.
