Five decades of golf

IT was 50 years of golf at Drouin Golf Club’s course on Saturday and a large field of 126 men and 15 women teed up in the monthly medal to celebrate the event.
Garth Quenault (23) celebrated in style winning the medal and C grade with an excellent 67 nett.
Runnerup in C grade was Peter Bethune with 68, followed by Ron Harris 72 and Henk VanDeuren 72.
In B grade, Jeff Montheath (19) had a great day also to win with 69 from Bob Ramage 70, Jim Bransgrove 71, John Robbins 71 and Charlie Hardy 71.
A grade was won by Marty Dalziel (14) with a 68 nett, runnerup was Mark Wooton 70, followed by Graham Austin 71 and Clint Hickford 71.
Nearest to pins – second: John Robbins, fifth: Jack Gardiner, 19th: Jesse Youngman and 23rd (pro pin): also Jesse Youngman. The CCR was 73.
Audrey Smethurst (23) was the runaway winner of the ladies with 75 nett and the Irene Morgan won the nearest to pin on the 19th.

SUNDAY COMPETITION

After the ‘Rock Around the World Show’ held at the club on Saturday night the golf continued on Sunday with a fourballbestball medley Stableford event.
A reasonable field assembled for the shotgun start and the winners were the fatherandson combination of Shane and Liam Dwyer with 47 points. Runnersup were Gerry and Mary Tymensen on 44.
Better scores were Doug Clark and Sylvia Martin 43, Mike and Ann Roberts 43 and Kevin and Robyn O’Brien 43.
This event was followed by the laying of a time capsule adjacent to the putting green that was witnessed by many of our clubs long standing members.

MIDWEEK RESULTS

Wednesday was a shocker with just 41 players teeing off and not many of them completing their rounds.
With enough players for just one grade Colin Moss (22) braved the conditions to score 35 points and take the trophy from Brian Kemp 33. Rob Woodward and Jayden Doyle both had 30 .
The CCR was the maximum 74 and balls went down to 29 on a countback.
Robert Palmer made a guest appearance and stole the show at the Thursday seniors’ ninehole event, winning with 20 points. Brian Kemp was runnerup with 18.
Sylvia Martin continued her recent good form by winning the ladies section with 16 points, Mildred Lyon and Audrey Smethurst were next on 15.
Last Monday Ross Lang was the winner with 20 points from Alan Fagan 19.
