STUDENTS at Kooweerup Secondary College had a view at life behind the news when Nine Network presenter Peter Hitchiner visited the school yesterday morning.
Mr Hitchiner talked about his career in television as a reporter and presenter and gave the students the opportunity to ask questions about his work.
He explained how he started work around 2.30pm and began to learn from reporters what had been happening during the day in preparation for the 6pm bulletin. He works through until 9pm.
Students asked if he got nervous when he started presenting the news.
“Yes, I did get nervous,” he said.
Year seven students Stephanie Cahill and Angelo Koutsarkis were chosen to have a go at delivering a news report in front of the assembly of the year seven, eight and nine students.
The two students were handed pretend Logie awards for their efforts.
Mr Hitchiner presented the form leader and house captain badges to the students given this responsibility for the year.
Mr Hitchiner said he enjoyed speaking to the students and they had asked good questions.
“I’ve been working for Channel Nine since 1973 and I enjoy visiting schools talking to the students so they can get some insight into what we do. They are part of our audience,” he said.
Mr Hitchiner was to travel to the school by helicopter but it was not available due to it being required for news coverage of bushfires in another area of the state.
Principal Geoff Pledge said the students appreciated the visit.
