Green waste may be collected fortnightly

LAWN clippings and other green waste materials could be picked up on a more regular basis in Pakenham and other major centres around Cardinia Shire.
The council has raised the prospect of improving green waste collection processes as part of a review of its waste management system.
A recently released council report on waste management found the current bimonthly bookin service was inadequate.
The report said too many people were putting green waste into their hard rubbish bins for collection.
“Where green waste services are not provided, green waste is found to represent approximately 33 per cent of the total volume in the domestic garbage bin,” the report said.
The council will survey residents with a view towards a binbased fortnightly green waste collection.
Depending on community feedback, the review could result in a system similar to the one introduced in the City of Casey last year.
The City of Casey initiative was controversial, with many residents complaining about the cost.
Cardinia Shire is seeking input on all aspects of its waste management strategy, with submissions to close at the end of this month.
The strategy reviews current garbage, recycling, hard and green waste services in the shire, and will make recommendations for the future in line with council’s goal of minimising the amount of waste going to landfill.
Key recommendations in the strategy include:
•Surveying public demand for a fortnightly wheelie binbased green waste recycling service for residential areas.
•Looking at the option of changing to an annual hard and green waste collection, rather than the monthly bookin one.
•Helping schools run programs of recycling and waste minimisation.
•Encouraging “public place” recycling facilities at shopping centre, main streets and festivals.
•Encouraging businesses to obtain recycling bins.
•Promoting the MyPlanet disposable nappy recycling service and cloth nappy wash services.
•Looking at the problems of litter and ways to better managing it.
The strategy is now available at the shire office in Henty Way, Pakenham.
