Shortage forces buyers to pay

FOR the week ending Monday, 25 July, total yarding at the VLE Pakenham was 3318 plus bobby calves.
This number consisted of 931 cattle on the Monday, 512 at last Tuesday and 1875 at Thursday’s store sale.
After the very strong competition at last week’s store cattle market, feedlots and restockers lifted the ante further.
Prices for cattle to turn out were mostly five cents to 11 cents per kilogram dearer, with a number of poor quality purchased at higher prices.
Trade buyers also paid slightly more money for a reduced selection of vealers and yearlings.
Most cattle of reasonable to good quality made between 200 cents and 248.6 cents per kilogram.
Heavier steers, bullocks and older heifers also sold to dearer trends, reflecting the trends of the previous week’s grown cattle market.
