BERWICK Quilters group has made a generous donation to Upwey Fire Brigade’s driver education program.
Following the death in 1995 of two young Upwey firefighters, Anthony and Travis Hall, a driver education program was established for young adults aged between 18 and 21.
Three courses are available to volunteer firefighters and a further three to young drivers in the community.
The Berwick Quilters, with the Foothills and Cottontails quilting groups, held an exhibition in May in Berwick’s Old Cheese Factory.
The exhibition, held over three days, showcased quilts and wall hangings and raised more than $400.
Berwick Quilters member Sue Farr said the group decided to donate money to the Upwey Fire Brigade because a member’s daughter had been chosen to take part in the brigade’s driving course.
“In donating our money to the brigade, we hope we can contribute in some small way to safer driving practices on our windy, often dangerous roads,” Ms Farr said.
Accepting the donation, Upwey Fire Brigade captain Peter Marke said the money would ensure another four young drivers would be able to join the program.
