Rain and snow fails to cool Baw Baw prices

LAST Wednesday’s Baw Baw Livestock Exchange fat cattle market at Warragul saw 477 cattle, and the Thursday cow and bull sale saw 323 cows and three bulls.
Rain and snow greeted buyers, agents and vendors on Wednesday at the fat cattle sale where 477 head were on offer.
Heavy steers continued to hold value, heifers remained steady as did vealers. Quality was a little heavier with a yard average of $712 per head.
Vealer quality was up on previous weeks, for an average of 215.9 cents which equated to $630 per head.
Top price went to N. and D. Renshaw at 258.2 cents per kilogram, heifers were lighter on average and made to 235 cents for an average of 183.6 cents, lighter steers bought back the steer price to an average of 157.8 cents, although the heavy steers kept the price per head steady, steers made to a top of 231.6 cents. A total of 45 buyers were in attendance on the day.
Thursday proved just as cold, and only three bulls braved the conditions with the top bull making 152 cents per kilogram.
A total of 323 cows were also present and made to a top of 156 cents, down on last Thursday’s top rate.
Cows were lighter in condition on average to make an average of 127.4 cents per kilogram or $591 per head.
Unweighed cattle slipped also with a top price of $688.
