AFTER entertaining Gazette readers with his response to the woman shortage in Nar Nar Goon, Kooweerup poet Mal Pugh has taken aim at the Growling Grass Frog.
Known to many as Mal Function, Pugh has put a humorous slant on the rising prominence of the endangered species – frogs that is.
Developers have spent plenty on restoring and avoiding their habitats, including VicRoads which forked out about $250,000 to protect the species when it was threatened by the construction of the Pakenham Bypass.

From Dandenong to Darwin,
From Proserpine to Perth,
A pecking-order long has reigned on this part of the earth.
The adult human-being at one time topped the list,
But amphibian interference has given tradition a twist!
There’s a spanner in the works an’ it’s gone beyond a joke,
Seems frogs are more important now than all we human folk!
We put our best foot forward an’ battle the daily slog,
Yet we don’t have a leg to stand on if we dare upset a frog!
Support for Growling Grass Frogs is absolutely boomin’,
Drowning out the voice of the average growling human!
The pecking-order’s shot to bits, It’s all gone up in smoke,
Frogs are taking prominence…it’s enough for me to croak.
